Letter from the Board Chair, David Healy
This year’s Annual Report marks both a celebration and a transition. After 15 years of visionary leadership, Carole Charnow will retire as President & CEO of Boston Children’s Museum—leaving an extraordinary legacy that has shaped not only this institution, but also the role of the Boston Children’s Museum in Boston and beyond.
Under Carole’s guidance, the Museum became a place where creativity and community meet—where learning is joyful, play is purposeful, and imagination has no boundaries. Her leadership carried forward our mission through every challenge and opportunity, including the transformational campaigns that strengthened our financial foundation, and expanded our reach to children and families across Massachusetts and beyond.
It is only fitting that we honor Carole’s journey through the very values she helped define for the organization. Our values are summed up in the word C.R.E.A.T.E.—and Carole has truly embodied our values in her leadership.
Creativity. Under Carole’s guidance, the Museum became a national leader in innovative programming—from exhibitions that invite children to explore science and engineering, to groundbreaking initiatives like You, Me, We, which courageously engages families in conversations about race, bias, and empathy. Her vision turned this Museum into a creative learning organization for all.
Respect. Carole has always been centered on children and families, ensuring that our doors are open to all. Through initiatives like Boston Family Days and the EBT Discount Program, now a national model, she expanded access and strengthened our connection to the community.
Excellence. With over $75 million raised in campaigns, our debt reduced, and our endowment doubled, Carole has led the Museum through its strongest financial era. Her relentless pursuit of excellence has ensured that Boston Children’s Museum will thrive for generations to come.
Accountability. Carole has been a steward not just of our resources, but of our reputation. Her leadership on climate resilience, including a $10 million flood protection plan, has positioned us as an innovative and responsible civic partner.
Thoughtfulness. Whether guiding staff, building partnerships, or spearheading projects like Martin’s Park with the Richard family, Carole has led with a deep sense of purpose and humanity—balancing the needs of our work with respect for the lives and families behind it.
And finally, Equity. From DEAI award-winning exhibits, to pioneering programs in access and religious literacy, Carole has ensured that our Museum reflects and respects the full diversity of our community. She has advanced equity not just as an aspiration, but as a lived practice.
Carole has not only led the organization—she has transformed it. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the staff, and the families who come through our doors—thank you for your vision, your passion, and your unwavering belief in the power of play and learning. Your legacy will be carried forward in every joyful laugh of a child who discovers something new at Boston Children’s Museum.
